HDTC Supports Commission on Healthy Democracy
On December 9, 2023, HDTC Members unanimously passed a resolution supporting the creation of Commission on Healthy Democracy within the State Party. The full text of the resolution follows.
HDTC Chair Cynthia Burrow transmitted the resolution to MassDems Chair Steve Kerrigan, Executive Director Joe Sherlock, Senior Political Director Nigel Simon, and members of the State Party representing District 021, stating:
To remain viable and vibrant, we must attract new members—and they must reflect the diversity of our state. We must ensure that our State Party and our elected officials represent the backgrounds, experiences, and concerns of all Massachusetts residents. We feel the establishment and support of this new committee will move us closer to reaching these important goals.

Resolution on Commission for Healthy Democracy
Passed at December 2023 Holliston DTC Meeting (12/9/23)
Whereas the Massachusetts Democratic Party is at a point of historic strength;
And whereas the Massachusetts Democratic Party should stand for healthy democracy;
And whereas healthy democracy depends on the values of inclusion, engagement, and competitiveness;
And whereas democracy in Massachusetts could be improved with regard to all those values;
And whereas participation in the Massachusetts Democratic Party is at only 29% of voters in Massachusetts, and only 18% of new voters registered since 2020;
And whereas Massachusetts has one of the most restrictive candidate ballot access processes in the nation;
And whereas Massachusetts ranks near the bottom with respect to contested elections;
And whereas the Chair of MassDems, Steve Kerrigan, has the power and authority to establish a commission to look at how the practices, strategies, rules, and charter of MassDems could further advance the fundamental democracy values of inclusion, engagement, and competitiveness;
Be it therefore resolved that the Holliston Democratic Town Committee supports the proposal for a MassDems Commission on Healthy Democracy proposed by Democratic Party members, Danielle Allen, Steve Grossman, and Nicole LaChapelle;
And be it also resolved that the Holliston Democractic Town Committee will transmit a copy of this resolution to Chair Kerrigan and to State Committee members representing the Second Middlesex &Norfolk District in support of the establishment of a Commission on Healthy Democracy in 2024.
